A young girl is dividing her time between Ontario’s cottage country and the glamorous streets of Paris and Milan, thanks to a career opportunity that has put her on the pages of Vogue magazine.
Madeline Berrevoets calls Gravenhurst, Ontario her home. When her father brought Berrevoets to a modeling agency one year ago, the world’s most glamorous cities opened their fashion catwalks to the 16-year-old. After leaving the glitz of fashion week recently, she easily slid back into the routines of school and hanging out with friends. “It’s really just like a job. I don’t think of it as anything special,” Berrevoets said. She could be thought of as an accidental fashion model. A pair of yellow rain boots makes the most important fashion statement for Berrevoets when she’s walking her school’s hallway. Friends say it shows Berrevoets is unchanged by her high-fashion life. They are proud of their jet-setting schoolmate. “She’s really grounded,” best friend Lauren Tingey said. “When she comes home … she doesn’t treat us any differently.” Berrevoets’ parents are proud of their daughter’s sudden cache in the fashion world and claim her success is not due to their heightened fashion sense. “Fashion isn’t really our thing…We don’t even have a mall in this town,” mother Esther Childs said. The entire family is treating Berrevoets’ new-found fashion career as a lucky opportunity.
“She has been given this gift of a great face … so she’s just taking this opportunity to put some money away for school,” Childs said. Far from being dazzled by the bright lights and paparazzi of the fashion world, Berrevoets has a wait-and-see attitude about her future in modeling.

Naomi Campbell is stunned by allegations she hit her maid Ana Scolavino, insisting she is a “loving, giving” person. Naomi, who reportedly hurled a mobile phone at Scolavino last week , faces a possible seven years in jail after being charged with assault by a New York City court. The 35-year-old catwalk queen denies the accusation and says, “You can’t stop people from thinking what they want to think and there is always two sides to every story.
“I’m someone who is very loyal. I will never take from anybody or want anything of anybody else’s. “I just want to live my life honestly and one day at a time and be honest and giving and loving to the people that are giving and loving.”
Naomi allegedly threw her jewel-encrusted mobile phone at Scolavino after accusing the maid of stealing her jeans. Scolavino required four stitches to the back of her head after the alleged attack.

Alright, we’ve seen plenty of these man and boy-man styled humanoids, when are the ladies going to get their proper send up as an anime-styled future bot? That’s a good question, and Takahashi-san — creator of the wonderful Chroino and Manoi bots — has an answer with his new femme bot, the FT “FemaleType.” Of course, being sexy isn’t all about how you look standing still, so FT has the strut of a fashion model with the twist of her hips and feminine posture. We’ll keep an eye out for video of this strut in action, but we do know that FT is built out of carbon fiber, stands 14-inches tall, weighs a mere 1.8 pounds, and should be in production in a bit more than a year. Rumors of romantic interest between Manoi and FemaleType could not be confirmed at this time, but apparently Chroino and FT have a “history.”
Sooner or later they’ll conquer the catwalk….

Now they are looking for China’s next big face. Four days of workshops, photo shoots and interviews will be held June 25 to 29 with a grand finale where the winners will be picked on June 29. “We see a growing demand foreign faces in modeling in China as a result of the growth of Asia’s fashion industry,” says James Ho, president of Vancouver-based ITM International Top Model Corp., who is hosting the search in conjunction with New Silk Road Company modeling agent in China. Women ages 16 to 25, who aspire to become an international model can download an application at www.itmmodel.com.

Czech supermodel Karolina Kurkova (nicknames Kaja, Kinka, KK, Karo, KoKain etc…) and Latin pop star Shakira received awards for their humanitarian work and then watched a fashion show featuring clothes from nine developing countries partly made by women trying to escape poverty. More than 400 fans and fashionistas joined guests for the two events and a panel on Poverty, Women and Human Rights on Monday. It focused on the success of small microcredit loans which hundreds of millions of women have used to start businesses and the need to help the one billion people who still live on $1 US a day or less. The nonprofit organization Women Together, which is currently concentrating on providing small loans so low income women can produce textiles, sponsored the awards and the fashion show. It honoured 10 women and two organizations.
Kurkova was honoured for working for the welfare of children through organizations such as the Beautiful Life Fund and Free Arts. She opened the fashion show saying the designers were introducing fabrics from traditional weavers to the western world of high fashion.
The audience, which included Nane Annan, wife of Secretary General Kofi Annan, applauded loudly for the high-fashion clothes from Colombia, Panama, India, Uruguay, Bangladesh, Mexico, Morocco, Peru and Brazil. In addition to Shakira and Kurkova, many others winners showed up to accept their awards - a Spanish contemporary sculpture.
They included Ela Bhatt, founder of the SEWA Co-operative Bank in India which has provided microcredit loans to 800,000 women; former Spanish Red Cross president Cristina Macaya; Brazilian writer Nelida Pinon; and Consuelo Ciscar who has promoted cultural and arts programs in Valencia, Spain. There was disappointment in the crowd that several famous winners sent representatives to collect their awards including actress Angelina Jolie, Queen Rania of Jordan, Senator Hillary Clinton, and Kerry Kennedy who founded a human rights centre named after her late father, Robert Kennedy. The two institutions to receive awards were the Washington-based nonprofit, Finca International, which promotes microfinance, and the Spain’s Porcelanosa Group, one of the world’s leading tile and bathroom and kitchen manufacturers.

Kate Moss is set to marry on/off lover Pete Doherty in a Scottish castle later this year. The Babyshambles frontman says the pair - who have been through a series of public break ups and reconciliations - are planning to tie the knot in the autumn. The drug addled rocker is quoted in Britain’s The Sun newspaper as saying: “We are going to marry. It’s going to happen at a Scottish castle somewhere between September and November.”A posh Scottish castle. That’s going to be so cool.”Meanwhile, Kate is reportedly paying ?10,000 to repair her junkie lover’s teeth.The stunning supermodel has arranged for a top dentist to fix Pete’s crooked smile - after years of smoking, drinking and poor personal hygiene have left him with rotten gnashers. A source is quoted in Britain’s Daily Star newspaper as saying: “The only way to save their romance is to save his teeth. Pete suffers from terrible halitosis because he rarely brushes his teeth.”But he’s terrified of losing her so he’s agreed to see the dentist.”
At the same time Kate has supposedly signed a new ?500,000 contract with Calvin Klein after she has successfully rebuilt her career since photos were published last year in a British tabloid of her snorting a substance alleged to be cocaine. Scotland Yard has been investigating her alleged drug use, but legal sources predicted there would not be enough evidence to charge Moss with anything. Although she lost several contracts when the scandal broke, Moss has been working steadily since spending a month in an Arizona treatment center.
The new contract with Calvin Klein boosts her estimated annual earnings to 9 million pounds, which is nearly twice the amount she was making before the scandal.

Mumbai police to probe fashion show obscenity
Officials in Mumbai are to probe whether a blouse slipping off a model and a skirt’s malfunctioning zip at a recent fashion show were “deliberate” acts, a news report said yesterday.
Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil has asked the Mumbai police commissioner to check all video clips of the Lakme India Fashion Show held last week to check if the wardrobe malfunctions were a “deliberate and indecent act”, Indian Express newspaper reported. On March 29, a model’s halter blouse slipped down while she was walking the ramp. The next day another model’s skirt split because of a malfunctioning zip.
The events outraged Mumbai’s politicians who have been running a morality campaign which included shutting down of the city’s famous beer and dancing bars last year.
A legislator from the conservative rightwing Shiv Sena party raised the issue in the state legislature on Monday. “It (the halter blouse slipping) was an obscene act which was beamed again and again by TV channels. The government should take serious note,” Shiv Sena legislator Neelam Gorhe said.
“The issue of the dresses falling off at the fashion show was discussed in the legislative council (upper house of the state legislature) today,” Patil said on Monday. “We will take action against the people involved and the fashion organisers if investigation proves it was a deliberate act,” he added.
Patil said his government was not against fashion shows but wanted decency to be maintained.
“This was clearly a mistake and should be understood as one,” designer Narendra Kumar was quoted as saying by the Indian Express. “We don’t want everyone to be veiled, we are lucky to live in a free country.”
Although such moments are common at fashion shows, the media had questioned whether designers had conspired to create a stir for the low-key style festival that ended on Saturday ahead of a rival event in New Delhi which started yesterday. What a scandal!

… jail, after being charged with assault in a New York Court - but she insists she is being “extorted.” Naomi denied hurling a mobile phone at her assistant on Thursday, insisting the charges were “falsely” brought against her as revenge for sacking the employee earlier on Thursday. “I am fine. The police have been really nice. It won’t be the first time I have been extorted,” Naomi Campbell says. As we know, the incident occurred at 8am on Thursday, when the 41-year-old aide was allegedly fired (at least Naomi says that) and then struck on the head with an object after Campbell accused her of stealing a pair of jeans (maybe Naomi has stolen them from some fashion show, who knows) . The alleged victim received four stitches to the back of her head while Naomi was arrested at her home and taken to the Midtown North Precinct in New York City. The judge at Manhattan Criminal Court put up bail of $3,500 (= 5 minutes work) and demanded Naomi appear in court again in June on the single charge of felony assault. She has been accused of throwing phones at her assistants twice: in 2000, the model pleaded guilty to hitting former assistant Georgina Galanis with a telephone and was ordered to take anger management classes. Another former personal assistant, Simone Craig, claimed Naomi Campbell threw a mobile phone at her in 2001. This story is getting interesting curiouser and curiouser…
