May 5th, 2006
Supermodel Kirsty Hume is hoping to walk off with an award at a brand new fashion event. The Ayr-born cover girl has been nominated for model of the year at next month’s Scottish Fashion Awards. Glasgow trained fashion designer Jonathan Saunders, who has dressed many celebrities including Kylie Minogue, has also been nominated in the designer of the year category. The awards have been designed to celebrate emerging and established talent in the Scottish fashion world including designers, retailers, textile producers, models and journalists. The finalists will be judged at a glittering event in Stirling Castle on May 7 presented by GMTV host Jenni Falconer. A panel from leading world fashion houses and magazines will judge the winners including Alexandra Shulman, editor of British Vogue. Michelle Mone’s Glasgow firm Ultimo has been nominated for fashion retailer of the year. Organisers have also announced plans for a fashion exchange programme to the US as part of the awards. The winner of the young designer/new talent award will have the chance to visit the US in October to attend the Los Angeles Fashion Awards. Tessa Hartmann, producer of this year’s awards, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for both LA and Scotland, and one which I am sure will grow in stature and prestige. “Innovative partnerships such as this can not only benefit the designers, but also retailers and manufacturers who are appreciating the global fashion market is smaller than we think.” The event will also honour Scots fashion legends including the late Bill Gibb who revolutionised British fashion in the 1970s and 80s. Twiggy, Bianca Jagger and Elizabeth Taylor were among his celebrity clients.
