Supermodel Kate Moss was named Britain’s Model of the Year Thursday — despite a trail of cocaine allegations that lost her millions in modeling contracts. Moss, 32, won out over two other finalists, Erin O’Connor and Alek Wek, at the British Fashion Awards. “Kate Moss is a fashion icon and without doubt one of the most prolific models in the industry,” the awards panel said in naming her the winner. “She has now been modeling for over 15 years and remains at the top of her game.” The British Fashion Council refused to comment on the potential controversy of Moss’s nomination. Moss lost contracts with H&M, Chanel, Gloria Vanderbilt and Burberry after the Daily Mirror newspaper published images of the model allegedly snorting cocaine with British rocker boyfriend Pete Doherty last year and dubbed her “Cocaine Kate.” After the pictures were published, Moss made a public apology and went to a drug rehabilitation clinic in Arizona. Prosecutors decided in June there was insufficient evidence to charge Moss. Since then, she has made a huge comeback, appearing frequently in fashion magazines and winning back contracts.
Still, some say giving an award to someone whose career has been pocked by drug allegations sets a bad example.
“To me it’s baffling …,” said Colombian Vice President Francisco Santos, speaking in Britain this week during an anti-drug campaign.
“Model of the Year” is an industry accolade for the British model who has contributed the most to the international fashion scene over the last year.
“She’s the kind of survivor we all want to be,” said Jeremy Baker, a fashion expert at London Metropolitan University. “The paradox is that since this time last year the scandal made her a lot better off.”
Since the cocaine allegations, Moss has won more than a dozen contracts with names including Bulgari, Christian Dior, Rimmel cosmetics and perfume Coco Mademoiselle. She has also signed deals with cell phone brand Virgin Mobile and French luxury label Longchamp. Topshop also recruited her to create a new clothing and accessories range, which will be launched in spring 2007. Magazines including British Vogue and Vanity Fair featured Moss on their front covers in August and September.
Leading press, buyers and industry figures chose the Model of the Year from a shortlist compiled by Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman and a committee. There is no money attached to the award.
George Ruston, director of Hope U.K., a drug education charity, said the companies paying Moss and the council nominating her contribute to glorifying drug use.
“They’re making decisions to reward the behavior,” Ruston said. “I really don’t think people should be making personal gain out of stuff that is causing lots of problems in the world. I think the responsibility partly lies with the people who are funding, using Kate Moss’s notoriety for their own economic purposes.”

A Colombian advertisement campaign against cocaine has singled out Kate Moss for criticism. Last year the model was fired from a number of high-profile contracts including Burberry and H&M after pictures were printed in a British newspaper which appeared to show her snorting the drug.
But following a stint in rehab she has risen back to the top of her profession with new contracts and a recently-announced a deal to design clothes for highstreet favourite TopShop.
Colombia’s vice president, Francisco Santos, said that he found her comeback “baffling” and accused her and other coke-snorting celebrities of fuelling his country’s drugs problems.
“We need to tell Europeans that that line of coke they snort is tainted in blood,” the ad campaign, which does not feature Moss, warns. Santos launched the campaign under the banner “The cocaine curse”.
“To me its baffling, that somebody who helps cause so much pain in Colombia is doing better than ever and winning more contracts than ever,” Santos told the Associated Press news agency.
Moss has not responded to the comments.

Supermodel Milla Jovovich has revealed her size zero figure means she cannot get pregnant. The Ukraine-born model, actress and fashion-designer says that she needs to be skinny to get work, but fears it is stopping her having a baby. The Fifth Element star, 30, admitted she had been trying to have a child with her British film director partner Paul Anderson, who she met in 2002.
‘I’d love to have a baby and I think the only thing stopping me is my active lifestyle,’ she said. ‘I need to take a year off and eat some yummy food and then, boom, it will happen. My body won’t let me get pregnant now because it knows it wouldn’t be in a healthy environment.’
Jovovich, who also starred in Joan Of Arc, is the face of Mango’s Autumn/Winter collection and also models for L’Oreal. Healthy adult women have a Body Mass Index of between 18.5 and 25.
Size Zero models have a BMI of less than 18, which is categorised by doctors as medically underweight.
Midwife, nutritionist and acupuncturist Zita West treats about 500 women a year who are too skinny to get pregnant.
‘Weight affects fertility in a big way,’ she said. ‘Too far underweight and periods can just stop.’
Victoria Beckham, 32, was recently reported to be on a high carbohydrate diet to improve her chances of conceiving again.
Last month, one of the world’s biggest fashion shows banned ’stick-thin’ models. The Clothes Show Live said it needed to ’set a responsible example’ to the thousands of impressionable young girls who flocked to the catwalks.

Stunning South African supermodel Minki van der Westhuizen has been named the world’s sexiest cricket WAG.
The stunning blonde on-off girlfriend of South Africa’s captain Graeme Smith topped an on-line poll of more than 10,000 cricket fans to find the game’s top totty.
Minki, 22, is the winner of the inaugural International Cricket Cutie Trophy organised by website Stick Cricket to coincide with the ICC Trophy currently taking place in India.
She skittled the opposition with more than three-in-10 voters (30.45 per cent) naming her the world’s fittest pavilion pin-up. Minki and Smith are South Africa’s answer to Posh and Becks.
Runner-up in the International Cricket Cute Trophy was Madhi Muralitharan, wife of Sri Lankan spin wizard Murali, while Australia struck an early blow in the battle for the Ashes when Haley Bracken, wife of Aussie seamer Nathan, came third.
Libery X singer Jessica Taylor - fiancee of England batsman Kevin Pietersen - was the highest placed English CWAG with Rachel Flintoff, Freddie’s other half, seventh.
Stick Sports director Chris Berry said: “Minki is a cricket fan’s dream woman. She’s sleek, sexy and with a successful career to boot.
“Cricketers attract a finer class of WAG. While football is a game for chaps copping off with Chavs, cricket is a game for gentlemen going out with goddesses.”
Minki shot to fame when she started dating Smith. Her talents and celeb status have seen her grace the covers of FHM and Cosmo, feature in the swimwear edition of Sports Illustrated and land the job of Guess jeans girl. She’s now been named as the girl cricket fans would most like to get caught out with.
The four runners-up are beauties that could bowl over any cricket fan. In second place came Madhi Muralitharan, firmly establishing her as the Indian subcontinent’s leading lady.
Mr Berry added: “The online debate about cricket WAGs has compounded an already serious problem for businesses of time wasting at work due to Stick Cricket.
“The Stick Cricket community has been hit for six by the beauty of cricket’s wives and girlfriends.”

Just days after Naomi Campbell was busted for allegedly attacking her drug counselor in London, people are already trying to cash in on her embarrassing return to the spotlight — problem is, nobody cares. TMZ has located a copy of Naomi’s book “The Swan”, for sale on eBay. The starting bid is a whopping $.01.
The seller, who claims to have purchased the book in 1995, even takes a swipe at the supermodel in the sales pitch. “It is quite a good read, though not because it is well written!”
If you’re not much of a reader, the book can also double as a projectile weapon. We’re sure Naomi would approve.
