Heather Arrick, who went by the name “Heather Stohler” in her professional life, was killed Sunday morning after a fire swept through the upstairs apartment she shared with her boyfriend.
Arrick, 29, grew up in Frankton before moving to Florida. She went on to a modeling career that took her to the runways of Europe, got her into photo shoots with Kate Moss for Calvin Klein and landed her on the cover of major fashion magazines.
“I’ve known her since I was 12,” said Travis May, 30, who met Arrick while both were attending Frankton Junior High School. “She was great, very thoughtful. She never forgot the little things, like your birthday.”
The Vincennes Fire Department was notified at 8:48 a.m. Sunday of a fire at 604 Broadway St. by another tenant of the building.
“Upon arrival, flames were visible,” Vincennes Fire Chief Mike Lankford told the Sun-Commercial. “About three-fourths of the apartment was a total loss, and the estimated damage amount is over $15,000.”
Arrick and her live-in boyfriend, 26-year-old Daniel Risley, were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital. Risley was transferred to Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis, but was pronounced dead around 1 a.m. Tuesday. Lankford said Risley suffered burns over a “substantial” portion of his body.
Knox County Coroner Dan Halter told fire officials Arrick died of smoke inhalation. Fire officials ruled the fire that consumed the apartment was accidental, but no exact cause has been released.
Arrick was born Nov. 29, 1978. May said she was raised by her adoptive parents, Ron and Jackie Arrick, in Frankton. After graduating from Frankton High School, she moved to Riverview, Fla., to join her biological mother, Angela Edwards.
It was in Florida that Arrick discovered her modeling potential.
“It was one of those modeling things at the local mall,” May said. “She tried out, and she was just a natural, so she ran with it.”
Arrick had the kind of strong bone structure models are known for, yet possessed a softness in her face. She had deep-set eyes that convey a sense of mystery in many of her photos. At 5-feet-9, she was ideal for modeling.
She joined the Elite Model Management and Ford Models agencies and was later represented by Donald Trump Management. Arrick modeled clothing for Calvin Klein, appeared in ads with Kate Moss and graced the cover of Marie Claire’s German edition and Vogue’s Italian edition.
“She was a model for close to 10 years,” May said. “She was on the cover of Vogue nine times. She did shows in Paris, Milan, New York. She lived in London for five years and had an apartment in Manhattan for four or five years.”
May said he spoke to Arrick by phone less than a year ago, at which time she was living in Florida. Tim Allen, Arrick’s cousin, told the Sun-Commercial that Arrick left the modeling world a few years ago and speculated that Risley had family in the Vincennes area, though none has come forward.

Supermodel Cindy Crawforddances on table tops for her husband and his friends.
Crawford admits she often performs a routine for Rande Gerber and his pals, although she doesn’t take her clothes off.
She said: “I can be wild. I’ll sometimes dance on a table for my husband and his friends. But not naked.”
The mother-of-two - who was previously married to Hollywood heartthrob Richard Gere - also wishes she had been raunchier when she was growing up.
She is quoted as saying: “I regret that I wasn’t wilder. I was working and I was nervous. I was the one in the corner with the book, being responsible.”
Last year, Cindy angered Peta by appearing on the cover of Russian Vogue magazine wearing a fur coat.
The 41-year-old beauty - who infuriated the animal rights group in 2004 when she agreed to be a spokesperson for their anti-fur campaign before modelling for exclusive mink clothing range Blackglama - sparked further controversy by gracing the cover of the well-respected fashion magazine sporting fur.

Kate Moss has been snapped in a series of raunchy outfits for the new Agent Provocateur bridal lingerie range.
The supermodel - who recently became engaged to The Kills frontman Jamie Hince – reckons stockings and skimpy knickers are the perfect way to make a bride feel special.
The 34-year-old reckons she wears Agent Provocateur all the time.
‘I find it’s the most sexy lingerie,’ she says.
‘I love their attention to detail and I’m a particular fan of a knicker bum detail!’

Supermodel Agyness Deyn has told NME.COM that her collaboration with Five O’Clock Heroes has inspired her to form her own band.
The track ‘Who’ which is out on June 23 sees Deyn duetting with frontman Antony Ellis.
She said: “Basically I’ve been friends with Antony for years and years. He’s like my older brother. He was the first person that got me into playing the guitar, he was with me when we bought my first guitar and he’s encouraged me to get into music more.”
The star added that she has now formed her own band Gene Jacket, and that they are now working on tracks together.
“We’ve got three or four songs, we wrote a really cool song at Coachella actually which was exciting.” Deyn enthused. “It’s called ‘Hotel’, well we originally wrote and recorded it in Japan, then added bits at the festival. It sounds like The Vaselines, , maybelike Animal Collective. Just sounds, experimenting with stuff.”

An Australian magazine is being investigated after photographing a 16-year-old girl topless in two fashion shoots.
Russh Australia, a lifestyle and fashion magazine, hired Zippora Seven for a provocative 18-page editorial fashion spread alongside 16-year-old male model Levi Clarke.
Shot in March, one of the images depicts the pair sharing a bubble bath nude with Seven topless and Clarke’s eyes closed as if he is passed out.
In the foreground are four bottles of champagne.
The Classifications Act prohibits the depiction of nudity and sexual activity of minors under 18.
A spokesperson for the Australian Classification Board said: “I can advise that the board has contacted the publisher of Russh Australia.”
Seven’s Australian agent, Priscilla Leighton-Clark, said the photo shoot had gone too far.
“It’s wrong that our girl has appeared in a magazine exposing her breasts when she’s so young,” Ms Leighton-Clark said.
Russh editor Natalie Shukur defended the Seven shoot, which was inspired by supermodel Kate Moss and actor Johnny Depp when they dated.
“We believe Russh readers ‘get it’ in this narrative story,” she said.
“These are beautiful images of two young people in character.”
Russh is marketed towards fashion-minded 18 to 35-year-olds with almost equal readership of males and females.
In a brief interview with Seven, the magazine asked, “When and where was your first kiss?”
“My first lick was in the bubble bath with Levi,” she answered.
Seven lives in Auckland, New Zealand, but is in demand in Australia and has been shot locally for Vogue and Oyster magazines.
It was her second shoot with Russh this year. She appeared in the March issue topless while riding a horse.
In NZ, Seven is represented by Red11 agency and her mother, Ursula, is heavily involved in her career.
In Australia, she is represented by Priscilla’s Model Management, an agency that has a long-standing reputation for being extremely protective of its models.
“I can’t be on every shoot,” Ms Leighton-Clark said. “Had I known it was to be a topless shoot, (Seven) would never have done it.”

Remember when, not too long ago, dresses became the new hot thing everyone had to fill their closets to the brim with immediately? You’ve probably been unable to concentrate on your day-to-day as you incessantly wonder why that occurred. But today the Guardian has the answer: Kate Moss. She wore cocktail dresses during the day with flat boots, unstructured jersey dresses with oversize tuxedo jackets, and lots of other dresses in lots of other ways that women everywhere wanted to copy. In rare form, Moss granted the paper an interview on this topic. She’s doing press for her new dress-heavy Topshop range, which hits stores this week, and the paper needed this dress peg, we suppose, since it sounds like Moss didn’t say very much:
There was not, Moss says, a moment when she realised women wanted to dress like her. ‘Not really,’ she says, after a long pause.
Is it annoying, or flattering?
‘Ha! It’s flattering!’
Why does she think it happens? What is it about her that exerts power over women?
‘I think it’s because I don’t follow a trend. I just have a thrown-together look.’
…As Moss says, when asked if she’s varied the way she dressed as she’s got older: ‘Ha! No!’ She pauses. Then she laughs. ‘I still think I’m 17.’

Looks like there’s a couple of things missing as supermodel Heidi Klum and her flat chest head south for a holiday in Mexico.
Maybe it’s just the unflattering bikini top, but the 34-year-old German beauty looked half the girl she used to be.
Three children with pop hit hubby Seal, 45, seem to have taken a bit of a toll on her bust and tummy.
An onlooker said: “She still looks great but kids play havoc with your body — and supermodels are no different.”
Heidi was on her annual trip to Mexico to ‘re-marry’ Seal on the beach near their holiday home in Careyes, the venue for their original wedding in May 2005.
One local said: “They are so in love and it is beautiful that they keep their passion alive by getting married in the same place every year.”
So that’s one celebrity pair unlikely to lift and separate… unless Heidi gets herself a new bikini top.

Kate Moss’s boyfriend Jamie Hince has been getting her to pose nude - so he can paint her.
A likely excuse! But I’m told Jamie has become a keen artist and has been encouraging Kate to go starkers for him. The pair are inseparable at the moment - Kate told Radio 1 she couldn’t attend the Big Weekend because she was following The Kills’ American tour.
A pal of Hince’s revealed: “Jamie has done a selection of paintings, including one of Kate, and plans to exhibit in a gallery after The Kills have finished touring.”
Kate has posed naked for Lucian Freud before. Jaime’s stuff might not be up to his standard, but it’s bound to be better than her ex Pete Doherty’s offerings - daubed in his own blood.

Kate Moss has been replaced as the high-profile face of make-up giant Rimmel by singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor.
Ellis-Bextor, 29, won the contract after Rimmel decided to get a younger woman than 34-year-old Kate to promote their cosmetics range, reports the Sunday Mirror.
A source says, “Kate Moss has been fantastic but Rimmel wanted a new, fresh face. Sophie was the obvious choice.
“She is sexy and savvy with flawless skin and bags of attitude. She’s admired by young girls, she’s also a yummy mummy and men think she’s gorgeous.”

The media is having a field day exposing various celebrities and their drug use. Back on the hit list is Kate Moss alongside Naomi Campbell. According to model booker Gavin Maselle who spoke exclusively to the Sun, Naomi and Kate took a huge amount of drugs while meeting Nelson Mandela in South Africa in February 1998.
He tells stories of their drug sessions, lesbian romps, his time in the shower with Kate and how Naomi is “downright rude”.
We all ended up lying on Naomi’s bed. Naomi was being very dramatic. She would go into the bathroom, snort, come out and change into this fabulous Pucci kaftan and rant and rave about her fabulous life.
Kate spent a night of lust with the American model on the same trip, Gavin revealed.
The pair snorted line after line of cocaine before slipping between the sheets of the king-sized bed in Kate’s hotel suite.
He’s also exposed Kate as a drug smuggler telling how she smuggled ecstasy, cocaine and the date-rape drug Rohypnol in a “Faberge egg”…..
Gavin said: “She travelled the world with that egg.” Kate flew to Cuba the next day with it full of ecstasy and Rohypnol.
