But Naomi Campbell reckons that golden age is over.
And the new wave of fashionistas such as Agyness Deyn and Lily Cole have a lot to prove.
In fact she believes the only model currently worthy of the title “super” is Brazilian Gisele Bundchen - former squeeze of Leonardo DiCaprio.
“I think the term ’supermodel’ gets thrown around too much nowadays,” says the catwalk queen.
“Models need to earn their stripes - I just think the term is used a little too loosely.
“Kate Moss is obviously a supermodel but after Gisele, I don’t think there’s been one.”
Naomi - who was chosen to be on the cover of Vogue Italia’s All Black issue recently - also reveals that her pal Kate doesn’t actually like the catwalk!
That’s why the Streathamborn stunner hasn’t lined her up to appear in the Fashion For Relief charity runway show Naomi organises each autumn.

Naomi Campbell refused to pay a $400 bill at a Moscow hotel after burns were found on the silk sheets in her suite, it was claimed yesterday.
Miss Campbell, who was visiting the Russian capital with billionaire lover Vladislav Doronin, was asked to pay up by staff at the Ritz Carlton.
She stayed in the $20,000-a-night 11th floor presidential suite last week.
Cleaners found holes burnt in the suite’s silk sheets, apparently from cigarettes or candles, according to reports in Moscow.
But when the model was asked to pay, she allegedly refused, telling staff any damage should be covered by the room bill.
One hotel worker said: ‘As soon as they found the burnt sheets, the managers at our hotel rushed back to Naomi’s people.
‘But she sent back a message saying we were being ridiculous and there was no way she would pay any fee.’
Miss Campbell had arrived in Russia on a private jet provided for her by Doronin. It landed at Moscow’s Vnukovo 3 airport - normally used by top Government officials - where she demanded total confidentiality from staff and security, onlookers said.
At midday the next day Campbell went to the bar and bought their most expensive cocktail, before disappearing into the city.
She then enjoyed a lavish $3,400 dinner with Doronin and friends. Doronin, a property tycoon, has a $3billion fortune.
His penchant for high-living and beautiful women that has earned him the nickname of Moscow’s Donald Trump.
He and Miss Campbell, 38, met at the Cannes Film Festival in May. The secretive oligarch attended the recent London dinner for Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday, where Naomi was also a guest.
Last night a spokesman for Miss Campbell denied that there had been any damage to the hotel sheets.
She said: ‘She didn’t have candles on the sheets. She did not smoke in the hotel room. It is completely untrue.’

Kate Moss and guitarist Jamie Hince have put those break-up rumours to bed after being spotted enjoying a shopping trip and a warm embrace.
The pair were reported to have split up following a blazing row in the early hours of a Saturday morning at the start of July.
But the Croydon-born supermodel was clearly delighted to be back in the indie rocker’s arms, with the pair meeting and embracing at a pub before heading for a shopping trip at Selfridges in Oxford Street.
The couple had previously been dating for about 10 months, but following the row Jamie, a British guitarist with the band The Kills, was seen packing his bags and leaving Kate’s home.
Jamie is currently touring Europe with his band until October, and Kate has just returned from a holiday aboard on a Â?20million yacht in Sardiniaalong with friends Davinia Taylor and her husband Dave.
The split was reported to be based around Kate’s jealousy of the attention Jamie received from other women, with Jame said to be tired of Kate’s mood swings.
A friend said previously: ‘Kate sometimes gets wound up by Jamie when he is around other women, but he won’t be a doormat and refuses to give her the constant reassurances she wants.’
Despite the rift, the cooling-off period seems to have given the couple time to reflect and repair their relationship. One onlooker said: ‘It squashes any rumours of a possible split.’
And as these pictures show, the couple certainly seem closer than ever.

Kate Moss has been getting jealous texts from her boyfriend while on holiday in Sardinia.
Kate, 34, is said to be “deliberately” flirting with handsome men to make her Kills star lover Jamie Hince - who didn’t join her on the yachting holiday after they had a row - jealous.
A source told Britain’s Daily Express newspaper: “Kate deliberately, and in full view of the photographers, chatted to a range of good looking male guests, friends of her pals Davinia Taylor and her husband Dave Gardner, who hosted the trip.”
Among the texts, one written by Jamie, 39, is believed to have said: “Who’s that hunk on the yacht you’re gazing at?”
Kate’s friend insists the supermodel has no intention of acting on her flirtations, saying: “Kate spent a lot of time on the yacht testing Jamie but refused to pick up the phone to him. That was her way of letting him sweat and making sure he really appreciates her.”
Kate is expected to holiday in Thailand with Jamie later this year.
Earlier this month, it was reported Kate’s ex-boyfriend, troubled rocker Pete Doherty, had been trying to win her back. He has apparently sent her a string of text messages, on the year anniversary of their original split.
It has also been rumoured he will turn the ashes of his recently deceased cat Shelley into a ring to present to Kate in a bid to rekindle their relationship.
