IT’S an honour dubbed “first face” and yesterday Brisbane’s top international modelling export Catherine McNeil was granted the title at New York Fashion Week, opening the Diane von Furstenberg show.
With A-list heavy hitters including Vogue editor Anna Wintour, singer and actress Jennifer Lopez and Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria looking on, McNeil was the first model to stride down the runway – a gig reserved for the world’s top catwalk queens.
And the Logan glamour girl stole the show in a trademark von Furstenberg dress, a key piece from the designer’s show considered one of the must-see collections of the week-long fashion extravaganza in Manhattan.
McNeil’s “first face” privilege has only added to her status as one of the industry’s hottest commodities.
She also graces the cover of the September issue of US Vogue, considered by many to be the holy grail of fashion magazines.
“Catherine is really now a supermodel,” said Jodie Bache-McLean, the director of McNeil’s Aussie-based agency Dallys.
“We haven’t seen anyone like her since Elle Macpherson, and in the fashion industry she is among the top 10 most powerful models.”
However the former Logan schoolgirl was just part of the Aussie model invasion of New York this week.
Melbourne’s Abbey Lee Kershaw also walked in the von Furstenberg show.
And Brisbane’s Myf Shepherd strutted out for Marc Jacobs.

Naomi Campbell enjoyed an exclusive night at the Serpentine Gallery Summer party just hours after starting a 200 hour community service stint for spitting at police officers in London’s Heathrow airport earlier this year.
The model was all smiles at the event in London’s Hyde Park and mingled with stars such as Joely Richardson, Mario Testino and Damien Hirst.
However the glittery party was a million miles away from her day at the Whitechapel Mission drop-in centre earlier where the 38-year-old reportedly turned up 10 minutes late in a chauffeur driven limousine.
However, she was spared the worst jobs at the centre and instead was given the task of helping out with paperwork.
A source told the Daily Mirror: ‘It’s usually pretty gruelling work but not for her. She was friendly enough and said hello but she didn’t look too chuffed (excited).’
Campbell later said that she had invited her new friends at the soup kitchen to her London charity fashion show next week, aimed at raising cash for mums-to-be who die.
She said: ‘I had a great time today. Everyone was so lovely and welcoming.
‘I’ve invited them to my show and they’ve promised to come. I just want to keep my head down and get on with it.’
This is the second community service bout the model who was ordered to perform five days community service in America and attend anger management classes last year after she was found guilty of reckless assault against her maid Ana Scolavino.

Kate Moss has been bitten by the travel bug… literally.
The supermodel and her rocker boyfriend Jamie Hince both got itchy feet when they discovered her house had been infested with fleas.
So they fled themselves – to the safety of Ibiza.
The guilty culprits are her two Persian cats and now Mossy, 34, has had the whole house fumigated, leaving everything dripping in special anti-flea spray.
A friend told us: “Jamie and Kate are covered in red spots and Kate won’t touch him until it clears up.
They joked: “She’s used to hangers-on but this is ridiculous.”
It is not the first time Kate has had problems with her house of horrors. She has already had to replace the rush mat floors with plush carpet after it gave Jamie sore feet.
And then faced a barrage of criticism from neighbours over her cracked wall.
Kate’s pal Jude Law has had a lucky escape though. He was cat-sitting one of the offenders a few weeks ago, but escaped bite free.
No fleas on Jude.

A YOUNG model has risked being kicked off reality TV show Make Me A Supermodel by refusing to model semi-naked.
Sara Longman, 17, said she would not model in just her underwear and bodypaint in Melbourne’s Federation Square.
The leggy teen, from the Northern Territory, broke down and cried as she announced she could not go through with the photo shoot.
Territorians were outraged to see the scene on Off The Runway, a behind-the-scenes preview of tonight’s episode of Make Me A Supermodel, which is presented by Jennifer Hawkins.
Sara said she had to take a stand against modelling semi-naked and hoped Australians would support her by not voting her off the show.

Time for Community Service, the Sequel starring Naomi Campbell! In London yesterday the supermodel began the 200 hours of community service she was sentenced to after admitting to assaulting police during a fit over a lost bag at Heathrow airport. You’ll recall the last time a judge ordered Campbell to serve her community, she had to clean up a New York sanitation facility. Working in a soup kitchen this time, she shouldn’t have to worry too much about keeping her designer clothes clean, since other volunteers have the messy jobs of cleaning and washing dishes while Naoms conquers paperwork in the back office.
A fellow volunteer said Campbell was treated “like a princess,” adding, “It’s usually pretty gruelling work but not for her.” That disgruntled peer aside, the Mirror reports Campbell invited her new soup-kitchen friends to the charity fashion show she’s holding in London next week:
[Campbell] said: “I had a great time today. Everyone was so lovely and welcoming.

She can’t have expected them to be mean to her. Especially if she’s got things like paperweights and staplers lying around her new office.
