NEW YORK (Reuters) – The man charged with stalking television host Tyra Banks went on trial on Friday, with prosecutors saying he terrified the former supermodel by sending her packages and threatening her assistant.
Brady Green, 39, was arrested last March after he appeared twice at the Manhattan studio where “The Tyra Banks Show,” a popular daytime talk show, is filmed.
Green repeatedly contacted the show, sent Banks flowers with the note “When I see you, I love you,” and threatened to slit the throat of her assistant, causing Banks to “fear for her physical health and safety,” prosecutor Shawn McMahon said in opening arguments in New York State Supreme Court.
“His actions made him a stalker — not a fan, but a stalker,” McMahon said.
But Green’s defense attorney, Sydney O’Hagen, portrayed Green as a harmless fan and said Banks courted admirers by giving them multiple ways of reaching out to her and cultivating an image of approachability.
“She invites fans who are inspired by her shows to reach out to her,” O’Hagen said. “She repeatedly presented herself as someone her fans can relate to.”
Green was “an inspired fan, not a deranged fan, not a stalker,” O’Hagen said, adding that her client only wanted to attend a taping of the show and perhaps meet Banks.
Green has pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor stalking and harassment charges. He faces a maximum of 90 days in jail if convicted in the trial, which resumes in Manhattan on April 27. Banks, who also hosts “America’s Next Top Model,” is expected to be called as a witness.

Heidi Klum once said her husband Seal thinks she looks at her most beautiful when she is pregnant.
So perhaps it is no surprise to hear the German supermodel, 35, is expecting her fourth child in five years.
The British singer confirmed on stage in New York last night that another child was on the way.
During his concert at Radio City Music Hall, the proud father said: ‘The topic of debate outside our hotel is, “Is Heidi having another baby?”
‘Heidi and I are having another baby. I mean, Heidi is doing all the work…’
Seal, 46, then broke into a rendition of his song A Change Is Gonna Come, watched by Heidi in the audience with the couple’s three children.
Reports surrounding Heidi’s pregnancy started this week after the supermodel hid her belly beneath four loose-fitting layers as she stepped out for lunch in New York with her two sons.
Her choice of outfit – which included a vest, baggy T-shirt, oversized cardigan and long scarf – did little to quash mounting speculation she’s pregnant with her fourth child.
The couple have two sons together – Henry Günther Ademola Dashtu Samuel, three, and Johan Riley Fyodor Taiwo Samuel, two.
Seal is also step-father to Heidi’s four-year-old daughter, Leni, whose biological father is Italian F1 boss and Queen Parks Rangers FC owner Flavio Briatore.
Seal started dating Heidi while she pregnant with Leni and considers the little girl his daughter. Briatore has no involvement in the child’s life.
He previously asked the media to stop referring to Henry as his first child, saying: ‘Leni is my first child. Just like Henry I saw her take shape and move in Heidi’s body. And I was present at her birth, too.’
Heidi, who married Seal in Mexico in 2005, has previously said she revels in motherhood.
‘It’s never boring or quiet in our home, but we are truly blessed to have three healthy children,’ she has said.
After the birth of Johan, she told People magazine: ‘We love that they will grow up close in age. This is what Seal and I have always wanted: a home filled with children’s laughter.’

She’s made a successful career out of being a party queen, but even Paris Hilton can’t keep going indefinitely.
On her second of two very late nights out in London yesterday the American socialite appeared to be showing the strain, as her eyes began to swirl.
But despite the late hour Paris, who had been to London’s Double Club and then onto the Wellington, didn’t let her standards slip.
She looked as immaculate as ever with her blonde cropped hair held back with a sparkly silver headband.
The hotel heiress wore a strapless black dress, similar to the one she had donned the previous evening.
She was joined on her evening out by her boyfriend Doug Reinhardt, 23.
The previous night the two had enjoyed dinner at the Wolseley, followed by drinks at Mahiki, and onto a private party.
The two flew back to America today, after spending a couple of days in the capital.
Before London they had spent some time in Amsterdam.
In their three-months together the jet-setting couple have been to Hawaii, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Europe.
They started dating in February, a few weeks after Doug ended his brief relationship with Hairspray star Amanda Bynes.
Doug, 23, is Paris’s first relationship since her high-profile split from Good Charlotte rocker Benhi Madden after ten months together.
Writing on her MySpace page recently, the 28-year-old gushed about her new beau, but denied reports they had got engaged.
She said: ‘He’s my best friend, we are so much alike, we love to travel and we have the most incredible time together no matter where we are.
‘I’ve never been happier. He truly treats me like his princess and that’s how every girl should always be treated, never forget that ladies.
‘My parents love him too, so I’m really happy about that. I love his parents as well, they are such a lovely family. His mother is stunning, so beautiful, sweet, funny and smart. We all had such an amazing time in Maui together, so I’m glad Doug’s getting to know my family as well.’
