Carla Bruni takes a leaf out of Princess Diana’s book with undercover hospital visits

Carla_BruniFrench First Lady Carla Bruni has been following in Princess Diana’s footsteps with a secret late-night visit to the homeless in Paris.
The former supermodel spent the night with an ambulance service attending medical emergencies on the streets of the French capital.
The revelations come 15 years after Princess Diana disguised her self in jeans and baseball cap to make late-night hospital visits in London.
Bruni, 41, has now spent an evening with Paris’s Samu Social emergency service, speaking to people living rough around Paris.
L’Express magazine, which uncovered the First Lady’s noctural visits, said she went out with the ‘Samu’ on November 9 while her husband President Nicolas Sarkozy was in Berlin to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the wall.
The magazine said: ‘Carla Bruni’s visits were intended to be highly discreet.
‘She went first to the headquarters of the Samu, then went out with a Samu team onto the streets of Paris.
‘She was accompanied by Samu’s founder Xavier Emmanuelli and an advisor from the Elysee Palace.’
Like Princess Diana, Ms Bruni has become well known for her charity work, especially for AIDS sufferers.
The French media is now speculating that Bruni made the late-night visit to distance herself from widespread accusations she has been ‘meddling in politics’.
Members of Sarkozy’s own UMP party told the president he was ‘under his wife’s thumb’, and warned him that voters were appalled by her support for the culture minister Frederic Mitterand after he admitted his past as a far east sex tourist.
Colleagues also accused her of urging ministers to support to film-maker Roman Polanksi, who is awaiting extradition from Switzerland to the US for having unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl in 1977.
Then France’s leading society magazine described Bruni as the new Marie-Antionette, who had bewitched her husband with her left-wing views.
Last week she gave an interview to France’s Elle magazine insisting she was ‘politically incompetent’ and had no influence over her husband’s policies.
She told the magazine: ‘No one should imagine my husband is a lap-dog who allows himself to be influenced.
‘We don’t speak about politics because I have no competence at all.
‘I flick through political pages of newspapers like some people might read about football matches.
‘I’ll give my opinion if he wants it, but he never asks me about precise issues because I know nothing.’
French media commentator David Verges said yesterday: ‘If she goes out at night too many times, it will not long before the media begin calling Bruni the new Princess Diana.
‘She is clearly capable of keeping her night-time charity work secret if she had wished, and no doubt wanted the public to know about it to distract attention from recent bad publicity about her influencing her husband’s politics.
‘The visits with the Samu probably made with the best intentions, but whatever she does, the president’s wife will always attract criticism.’

That is quite a coat you are wearing, Naomi Campbell (for a one-time anti-fur campaigner)

Naomi_Campbell
You would never have guessed that Naomi Campbell was once a staunch supporter of the anti-fur in fashion movement.
It certainly seemed a distant memory as she stepped out last night in a Dolce and Gabbana coat from their 2009 autumn collection.
It is 15 years since she famously declared she would ‘rather go naked than wear fur’, but clearly she’s had a change of heart. .
The model wore the unusual white, grey and black coat, which has huge puff sleeves and jewelled buttons, to the premiere of Valentino: The Last Emperor in Milan last night.
She was with her billionaire boyfriend Vladislav Doronin on the red carpet.
And even though he seemed a little awkward in front of the cameras, Naomi, who wore a bling diamond bracelet and large ring, happily posed with her man – her arm gripped tightly through his.
The supermodel was a spokeswoman for PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and appeared naked in a high-profile poster campaign with four other models.
They posed under the slogan ‘We’d rather go naked than wear fur’ in 1994.
But she was sacked by the charity three years later after wearing real Russian sable fur at a Fendi catwalk show.
Her change is stance has led to her being branded a hypocrite by Sir Paul McCartney’s ex-wife Heather Mills.
The London-born model is unrepentant.
‘And as for that Heather whatshername [McCartney] saying she’d written to me to complain about me wearing fur and I’d never replied. I never received a letter, nothing,’ she said in an interview.
‘And yes, I am still wearing fur, but I’ve made up with that guy from Peta.’

Helena Christensen shows what is at stake in photographic climate change exhibition for Oxfam

Helena_ChristensenAn exhibition of photographs taken by Helena Christensen documenting the threats of climate change on people living in Peru opened in London today.
The photographs are a selection taken by Helena while travelling to her mother’s native country with Oxfam earlier this year. During the trip she saw people suffering from food and water scarcity in the face of rising temperatures, changing seasons and melting glaciers.
The exhibition, Meltdown, is at Proud Gallery, Charing Cross, from 19-29 November. It is timed just two weeks before The Wave demonstration, on 5 December in London and Glasgow. Thousands of people wearing blue will be calling for Gordon Brown to push for a fair and safe climate deal at the UN climate negotiations starting two days later.
Helena said: “For so many of us, climate change is a distant idea belonging in the future but for millions of people in developing countries, it is a devastating reality.
“We can begin to change this by demanding that world leaders meeting in Copenhagen move towards cutting emissions and providing funding so that poor communities can protect themselves from climate change. By coming together at The Wave thousands of voices can be one loud clamour for urgent action at Copenhagen for the sake of generations to come.”
The photographs premiered at the United Nations in New York when the UN General Assembly met in September and are on a global tour heading to Copenhagen for the UN climate negotiations next month.
Helena added: “The power lies in the hands of world leaders, and I realise that the drastic steps they must take in order to lower the carbon dioxide emissions won’t be an easy task. But it needs to be done – there is really no way around it anymore.
“I am looking forward with baited breath to the conference in Copenhagen. We, as a people, want to see some dramatic changes. A suitable Danish saying goes along the lines of, ‘every tiny stream put together creates one big river’. We all know that it will take time and cost a hell of a lot of money to change the world’s priorities but we know it’s possible.”
Oxfam Chief Executive Barbara Stocking said: “Helena’s photographs show how climate change is already taking hold in Peru, as is the case in poor countries around the world. But it is not too late. I hope this exhibition will encourage people to take part in The Wave and demand nothing less than a climate deal that will protect us all from climate change.”

British model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is set to thrill fans in the Victoria’s Secret catwalk show

rosi
She’s currently flying the flag for British models in the States and, after a rocky 2008, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley looks set for the big time in 2010.
The 22-year-old, from Tavistock in Devon, is currently making waves as one of the infamous Victoria’s Secret angels, alongside Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Marissa Miller and co.
She’s set to star in the lingerie giant’s popular catwalk show next month, which is America’s second most watched show, after the Super-Bowl.
Rosie started on the road to fame in 2003, when she was discovered by model agency Profile – after campaigns for Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and DKNY, she went on to model for Agent Provocateur and replaced Agyness Deyn as the face of Burberry in 2008.
She was also named Model Of The Year in the 2009 Elle Style Awards.
Rosie’s personal life came under scrutiny last year after a photo of her holding what appeared to be drugs paraphernalia was leaked on a modelling website.
Burberry declined to comment on the photograph, but a friend of Rosie’s said at the time: ‘She is aware of the picture’s existence, but she was 18 or 19 when that was taken. She’s just turned 21 so it’s two or three years old.’
She was later dropped by the fashion house.
The model recently split from her long-term boyfriend Tyrone Wood (known as Ty), son of Rolling Stone Ronnie and his ex-wife Jo.
She met the 26-year-old art dealer at a Rolling Stones concert in Barcelona in 2007.
In an interview conducted in 2008, Ty said he was ‘madly, deeply in love’ with her, while she was reported to have said: ‘I think it’s serious. There’s a healthy future ahead of us.’
Despite the split they still remain friends, and Rosie now looks to be fully focused on her career.
As well as her work for Victoria’s Secret, the stunning model is set to wow fans with her stunning photos in the latest 2010 Pirelli Calendar.
She flew to Brazil earlier this year to be photographed for the calendar which has been a universal success since it began in 1963.
Rosie said: ‘I’m very proud to be the only British spokesmodel for Victoria’s Secret. It has been an ongoing relationship for four years now, and 2009 has been such an exciting year for me.
‘I have lots of projects in the pipeline. I’m gearing up for the Victoria’s Secret show in New York City this week, and am looking forward to the release of the 2010 Pirelli Calendar. I hope 2010 will bring more exciting opportunities and projects.’

Kate Moss causes outrage with her Size Zero motto: Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels

Kate_Moss
Kate Moss
has been accused of encouraging young girls to become anorexic after glorifying a ’size zero’ slogan.
The supermodel caused outrage by revealing that one of her mottos is the phrase ‘nothing tastes as good as skinny feels’.
The saying is a watchword for millions of anorexics and bulimia sufferers.
Moss made the comments in an interview with fashion website WWD.
Asked if she had any mottos, Miss Moss said: ‘There are loads. There’s “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels”. That’s one of them.’
She later tried to qualify the remark, adding: ‘You try and remember, but it never works.’
The saying is believed to have originated from some early WeightWatchers members but is now commonly used on numerous slimming websites and blogs around the world.
One such site, caloriecount.about.com, carries the post: ‘Cuz a donut doesn’t taste as good as skinny feels.’
Last night, model Katie Green – who four months ago launched the Say No To Size Zero campaign – said: ‘There are 1.1million eating disorders in the UK alone. Kate Moss’s comments are likely to cause many more.
‘If you read any of the proanorexia websites they go crazy for quotes like these.’
Miss Moss’s comments were also attacked by Denise Van Outen.
‘Kate Moss is talking out of her size zero backside,’ she said.
The 35-year-old TV presenter, who is pregnant, told The Sun: ‘Having been in the industry for so long, she knows the impact her comment will have on vulnerable young women.’
She warned women against starving themselves, vowing: ‘After I have my baby I’ll lose weight through healthy eating and exercise. The sensible way.’
Miss Moss’s comment comes after a survey last month revealed that teenage girls are routinely missing two meals a day because they believe they need to lose weight.
It showed that 26 per cent of 14- and 15-year-olds often don’t eat breakfast, 22 per cent skip lunch and 10 per cent regularly go without either.
The study by the Exeter-based Schools Health Education Unit found that a majority of teenage girls – and 40 per cent of ten and 11-year-olds – believed they needed to slim but few were actually overweight.

Heidi Klum’s shows off her post-baby figure five weeks on… but still wants to lose 20lb

Heidi_Klum
Just two months ago Heidi Klum graced the red carpet at the Emmy Awards and proudly showed the world her impressively-sized baby bump.
But last night the German supermodel, who gave birth five weeks ago, cut a rather different figure as she joined a host of Victoria’s Secret models in New York.
The mother-of-four looked stunning in a pair of tight black jeans and leather jacket as she and 29 other models took over Times Square to plug the lingerie brand’s new fashion show, which will take place tonight.
However, rather than hitting the runway, Heidi will be hosting the event, revealing that she still wants to lose another 20lb (1stone, 6lb).
The 36-year-old, who gave birth to a girl called Lou Samuel with her singer husband Seal, is working hard to regain her shape and has a personal trainer on hand to help.
But she said last night that nothing is going to stop her wearing sexy outfits when she hosts tonight’s fashion show, which will see performances from the Black Eyed Peas.
She told People magazine: ‘I have some great one-of-a-kind latex pieces that were made for me. I figure why not? I embrace that I have more curves right now.
‘I’m definitely one of the heaviest of the bunch of the 30 girls in the show. And I still have 20lb to go,’ she admitted.
She added: ‘You definitely have less pressure hosting, when you don’t shake your booty in front of millions of people around the world.’
Speaking of her fitness regime, she said she is losing weight sensibly and not trying to get results too quickly.
She said: ‘There’s no master plan, but I have a trainer in L.A. who comes to my house
‘She’s helping me so I don’t overdo it. I’ve been walking on the treadmill. Walking up and down the driveway. She has a medicine ball so she showed me things on there. You can’t do too much too early.’
Heidi was joined by the likes of Australian model Miranda Kerr, 26, American Marisa Miller, 31, and Brazilian beauty Alessandra Ambrosio, 28, last night.
All the models were spray-tanned for the promotional event and arrived to Times Square on a bus.
The fashion show will air on December 1 on America network CBS.
