PERTH model Emily Cattermole is on the way to becoming Australia’s first indigenous supermodel after signing with elite American modelling agency Ford.
The 18-year-old will leave her Melbourne base to spend two months in LA from January to work with the agency that represents supermodels Christie Brinkley, Rachel Hunter and Chanel Iman.
A model since the age of 14, Cattermole is the granddaughter of former WA politician Ernie Bridge, who was the first Aboriginal political minister in Australia.
She was the face of the Perth Fashion Festival and will soon appear in a campaign for indigenous swimwear brand Kooey.
She said her heritage was important to her and while she didn’t see herself as a role model, she hoped other young Aboriginal people were inspired by her success.
“It’s a big part of my family and it’s a big part of my life,” Cattermole said.
“It’s a privilege to be indigenous and to be doing something good as well. I feel really proud.”
Her manager, Tanya Muia of Perth’s Chadwick Models, said Cattermole, who was already known for her talent on the catwalks of New York, Paris, Milan and Hong Kong, would focus on magazine and print work.
“The American west and east coasts are vital markets for an international launch and if she can succeed in LA, that would be fantastic,” she said.

George Clooney really does live a charmed life. Not only is he globally acknowledged as a heart-throb and respected actor, but he is known for having dated a string of beautiful women.
And now he is on holiday with supermodel Cindy Crawford – some men have all the luck.
Relaxing in Mexico with the 43-year-old and her husband Randy Gerber, the actor had also brought along his latest girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis.
But onlookers may have been confused about who was who as the quartet enjoyed the sunshine, lounging round the pool.
For despite being 12 years her senior, Crawford and 31-year-old model and actress Canalis could have been mistaken for twins at the Mexican resort.
Both wore bikinis, showing off their enviable figures as they swam and sunbathed, while Clooney, Gerber and a friend had obviously spotted an interesting sight as they larked around with binoculars.
Firm friends, Clooney and the Gerber-Crawfords often vacation together, whether it’s on the former’s yacht on the French Riviera or at his Lake Como home in Italy.
In addition, the Ocean’s Eleven actor also publicly supported Gerber earlier this year in May when he stood accused of sexual harrassment by two waitresses working for his company, the Gerber Group.
The women claimed they were fired for rejecting advances made by the supermodel’s husband.
However, Clooney – who had been with Gerber the night of the alleged incident – undertook a lie detector test to help prove the 47-year-old’s innocence.

Statuesque supermodel Erin O’Connor is clearly planning for the future, with a new project that takes her off the catwalk.
The 30-year-old has made a documentary about the fashion industry, due to be broadcast next month on Radio 4.
“I’m writing and producing the programme,” said Erin. “I hope it gives a flavour of how fun the fashion industry can be.”
The model was approached by Radio 4 and jumped at the chance to work on the documentary, part of which was recorded during London Fashion Week.
“The fact that it’s a one-off takes the pressure off somewhat, but I am nervous about the reviews,” Erin admitted.
“I hope it will lead to more projects in future, as I want to focus on writing.”

TIGER Woods crashed his car after fighting with his wife over reports he’s been having an affair with a hostess he recently met up with in Australia, it’s been claimed.
TMZ are reporting the world’s No 1 golfer and his model wife clashed over internet dispatches claiming Woods and sexy Manhattan hostess Rachel Uchitel recently hooked up in Melbourne where he was playing the Australian Masters.
It was first reported that Woods’ wife Elin Nordegren used a golf club to smash out the back window and help get him out of his SUV after he mysteriously crashed it overnight into a neighbour’s fire hydrant.
But the story has taken a new twist with TMZ reporting the couple had a heated argument where, according to a source, she scratched his face up.
The site said Woods beat a hasty retreat but his wife followed behind with a golf club. As Tiger drove away from their luxury Florida home, she struck the vehicle several times with the club.
Distracted, Woods then hit the fire hydrant and then hit a tree.
Rumours of Woods’ alleged affair have been circulating on the web over the past two days with reports the National Enquirer had confronted Uchitel at Woods’ Melbourne hotel this month during his stay.
According to the Enquirer, a friend of Ms. Uchitel’s broke the story that Rachel was having a romantic affair with Tiger.
The tabloid claimed Woods was having an affair with Uchitel – a sexy Manhattan hostess who lost a fiancé in the World Trade Center on 9/11 and was previously linked to married television star David Boreanaz.
Uchitel, a former party planner who has worked as a VIP hostess at swanky nightspots, denied it in a message sent to The New York Daily News from her Facebook account yesterday.
“There is NO relationship with tiger these girls quoted in the story are not being truthful,” she wrote.
“I resent my name being slung thru the mud.”
The Enquirer story – and a similar story in Star – quoted a woman named Ashley Samson and said she was friends with Uchitel and passed a polygraph.
“I did not say those things to those ’sources’ and im not friends with ashley simpson or whatever her name is,” Uchitel insisted.
The Florida Highway Patrol said Woods’ vehicle hit a fire hydrant and a tree in his neighbor’s yard as he pulled out of his driveway at 2:25 am.
Windermere police chief Daniel Saylor told The Associated Press that officers found the 33-year-old PGA star laying in the street with his wife hovering over him.
She told officers she was in the house when she heard the accident and “came out and broke the back window with a golf club.”
Woods had lacerations to his upper and lower lips, and he had blood in his mouth, Saylor said.
The chief said Woods was in and out of consciousness when his two officers arrived. He said the officers held Woods to the ground and “when he woke up, he tried to get up and lost consciousness.”
He said officers treated Woods for 10 minutes until an ambulance arrived.

Nearly two months after giving birth to daughter Lou Sulola Samuel, Heidi Klum introduces the infant to the world by posting several pictures of the little girl on her official website. Beside the mother-daughter duo, the supermodel’s singer husband Seal is also featured in one shot. Additionally, there are the pair’s sons; Henry Gunther Ademola Dashtu Samuel and Johan Riley Fyodor Taiwo Samuel, as well as Klum’s daughter, Leni, from previous relationship, on other photos.
Heidi Klum gave birth to Lou Sulola Samuel on date 9 last month. At that time, Seal released the following statement to share the news with the press, “It’s difficult to imagine loving another child as much as you love your existing children. Anyone who has a family will tell you this. Where will one find that extra love? If you love your existing children with all of your heart, how then can one possibly find more heart with which to love another?”
His statement, furthermore, read, “On Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, at 7:46 P.M., the answer to this question came in the form of our fourth child and second daughter. Lou Sulola Samuel was born, and from the moment she looked into both of our eyes, it was endless love at first sight. She is beautiful beyond words and we are happy that she chose us to watch her grow over the coming years.”
