Model Sophie Anderton told a court today how she was left ‘hysterical’ after being bombarded with text messages from an alleged stalker asking her to marry him.
Paul Davis, 58, first contacted Anderton to propose writing a biography of her and she referred him to her management company.
He continued to send text messages to her mobile phone despite her telling him to stop, Kingston Magistrates’ Court, Surrey, heard.
Davis told the frightened model he wanted to marry her on a mountain, buy her a solitaire diamond ring and take her for dinner to Claridges, in a string of 88 texts sent between January and April last year.
Anderton, wearing a slate grey jacket, appeared close to tears as she spoke of the first contact with Davis.
The 32-year-old told the court: ‘Over the course of the next few months it escalated, to the point I was having calls from 7.30 in the morning up to 1am.
‘The texts escalated from being work-orientated to being personal and I believe, in my eyes, rather obsessional.’
One she read out to court said: ‘How can I ask a girl to marry I have never met? That’s easy, I know enough about Sophie from my research.’
He discussed arranged marriages with her in another, and told her: ‘I’m looking forward to meeting you very soon. Trust me please, Paul x.’
She was ‘practically hysterical’ when she reported the matter to police on March 27 last year, having first assumed the ‘ramblings’ would stop.
She added: ‘At that period of time, I was scared to go to restaurants, I was scared to go on the Tube because I didn’t even know what this man looked like. It affected my life greatly.’
Anderton said she received constant telephone calls from Davis – including one when she was at the police station – and that she feared he meant to cause her harm.
‘In the beginning, I assumed it was work,’ she told the court.
‘When the texts became more personal I started getting rather frightened, and towards the end I couldn’t go on the Tube, I couldn’t walk anywhere without looking over my shoulder and I was frightened.’
Davis was warned not to contact Anderton by her management company and by Pc Claire Bowden, who answered the phone call from him in the police station.
Despite that, he did contact her again, the court heard, and was eventually arrested at his home address on April 2.
Davis, of Enfield, denies one charge of harassment on the grounds of insanity.
The trial continues.

A private funeral service took place today for Alexander McQueen, who was found hanged in his London flat earlier this month.
The ceremony was an intimate affair, attended only by the award-winning designer’s family and closest friends including Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Stella McCartney.
The fashion designer’s father Ronald was joined by his five children at the ceremony, which comes two weeks after the 40-year-old’s death.
Sam Taylor-Wood and boyfriend Aaron Johnson were also among the friends who gathered at Saint Paul’s Church in Knightsbridge to pay their respects, as well as heiress Daphne Guinness, who wore a dramatic cape from the designer’s autumn 2002 catwalk in tribute.
It is expected a larger memorial service open to McQueen’s supporters will take place later this year, although no date or venue has been confirmed.

‘We are focusing right now on the Paris show, which takes place on March 9,’ a spokesman for the label said.
An inquest heard last week how the 40-year-old hanged himself in the wardrobe of his London home.
He was known from comments left on his Twitter page to have been distressed by the death of his mother, Joyce, and killed himself on the eve of her funeral.
His sister Janet McQueen, from Hornchurch, Essex, who was among the mourners today, identified his body.
Several members of the family arrived wearing the McQueen tartan, a feature of the designer’s memorable Highland Rape catwalk show in 2006.
Born in Lewisham, McQueen, whose real first name was Lee, was the son of a London cab driver and the youngest of six children.
Though his career officially began at the age of 16, he often recalled his earliest memory when, aged three, he drew a picture of a dress on the wall of his family’s council house in the East End of London.

Wearing jeans slashed all the way up her thigh, complete with a Union Jack flag showing through, Elle Macpherson is not your average mum on the school run.
The Australian supermodel was pictured sporting the edgy look this morning as she dropped off her youngest son Aurelius to his lessons.
Youthful-looking Elle, 46, teamed her ?250 Hudson skinny flag jeans with knee-high boots, a ribbed jacket, blue scarf and sunglasses.
Not one to be put off by the bad weather, she even walked home by herself in the rain, apparently not tempted by a taxi or public transport.
Perhaps Elle, known as ‘The Body’ decided to wear the Union Jack flags in a nod to London Fashion Week, which draws to a close today.
Earlier in the month she was announced as Lisa Snowdon’s replacement on the reality show Britain’s Next Top Model.
As well a presiding over 25 wannabes battling it out for a modelling contract, Elle has also turned her hand to a charity campaign which aims to increase the awareness of cervical cancer.
She has leant her support to Wellbeing of Women, which funds screenings and vaccinations for women in the UK, urging them to visit their doctor for regular health checks.
Speaking about the campaign, she said: ‘Many women don’t take time out to be checked routinely, sometimes choosing to ignore it or worry about being checked.
‘It’s easy to think: “It won’t happen to me,” or “I don’t want to know what’s going on.”
‘The fact is, I always feel better after going to see the doctor for my regular checks. I know that I’m okay and that I’ve been responsible and faced my fears. Please get checked, ladies.’
