Gisele and Karolina on the Ultra-Thin Model Controversy…
From the catwalk to the living room, the latest fashion trend has become a weighty debate: Have models become dangerously thin?
Some have even voiced concerns that super-skinny models may negatively influence young girls to develop eating disorders.
Take a few statistics into consideration: The average runway model is a size two to a size four, while the average American woman is a size 14. Models are typically five-feet-ten and above, and weigh in around 120 pounds. While the weight debate continues, fashion show organizers in Spain recently declared that ultra-thin models would be banned from their runways.
At the launch of Victoria’s Secret’s “Very Sexy” make-up line, top model Gisele Bundchen spoke out on the controversy.
“I don’t find it sexy at all being a stick,” she tells.
While Gisele is famous for her curves, she says being slender is natural for her.
“At 16, no matter what, I couldn’t put a pound on,” she says.
Czech model Karolina Kurkova, also at the Victoria’s Secret launch, says that while some take it too far, it’s hard to tell who’s naturally thin and who might have an unhealthy obsession with their weight.
“I think the trend is very skinny,” she says. “Some people take it to extremes, but it’s so hard – it’s really hard to judge that.”
