Catwalk is still the place for Gemma Ward

CATWALK darling Gemma Ward has been forced to issue a statement defending her stellar modelling career after it was incorrectly reported she was retiring from the industry to focus on acting.
Having received rave reviews in the award-winning Australian film The Black Balloon alongside Toni Collette and most recently starring opposite Liv Tyler in The Strangers, the New York press last week jumped to the inaccurate conclusion that Ward had made the decision to step off the catwalk for good.
Known for putting the “alien chic” look on the model map, she has appeared on 24 Vogue covers and was the youngest model on a US Vogue cover aged 16.
But four years and a new career as a reputable actress later, the baby-faced blonde can still command more than $20,000 for runway shows and significantly more for advertising print campaigns for the likes of Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana and Burberry.
The notoriously private beauty, who shuns the press and rarely grants interviews, took the unusual move of issuing a statement to reassure her worried clients she wasn’t disappearing into the bowels of Hollywood.
“I was surprised to wake up this morning and read news of my own retirement,” she said.
“While I am taking some time off currently to rest and enjoy the company of friends and family, I am still very much a (excited and enthusiastic) working model and actress.
“I’m only 20, for God’s sake.”
