Lily Cole’s Cambridge blues

Emma Watson, who found her arrival at Brown University in America “pretty tough”, according to her fellow Harry Potter star Bonnie Wright, is not the only famous name to have struggled to adjust to life in academia. So, too, has Lily Cole.
The model, who is reading art history at Cambridge, says: “I found last year really weird. It was hard to settle in. I was a bit shell-shocked, but I think everyone finds that. This year is much nicer, and the courses are a lot harder.”
The 21-year-old actress, who appeared opposite the late Heath Ledger in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, says her happiness was not helped by the theft of her bicycle.
“They took the basket off and left it on the ground,” she says. “I think that was the most hurtful part of the ordeal! I bought the bike because it had a nice basket, and they just left it there.”
She adds: “I don’t park it at the station. The station is like a cesspit of cycles. It’s a bit ugly, so I don’t take my bike there. I don’t think it’s nice to put it in so much danger.”
When asked about her choice of subject at Cambridge, Lily explained: “I like doing things I haven’t learnt about yet. I’ve always been interested in art, and I love doing art…”
Talent contest
Forget voters, the support politicians are really desperate to win is that of Simon Cowell, the creator of The X Factor.
After David Cameron lavished praise on the talent show judge, Ben Bradshaw, the Culture Secretary, has now described his show as “Britain’s single greatest export”.
Peter Slowe, the chairman of the Labour Finance and Industry Group, adds that he “is the greatest example of a British entrepreneur who has made his mark in the creative industries, which, to my mind, is the future for our economy”.
