Sophie Ward returns to the catwalk

Sophie_Ward_49814While the more famous of Perth’s most well known modelling sisters hasn’t been seen on international catwalks for two years, Sophie Ward has taken to the stage at New York Fashion Week.
The older sister of supermodel Gemma Ward walked in Australian designer Toni Maticevski’s Autumn/Winter 2010/11 show, on day one of fashion week.
While Sophie has promoted herself lately as a writer and publisher, she has seemingly agreed to support her friend Maticevski in the Big Apple.
Meanwhile her sister Gemma’s abscence from the modelling scene has been the talk of the town this week, with The New York Post publishing a feature article titled Gemma Ward, A Supermodel Betrayed which included speculation that her lack of modelling appearances was due to weight gain.
The article claimed a source at her modeling agency, IMG, said “her moment is over … she is not coming back.”
However those in the know say Gemma’s lack of modelling work lately is due to her concentrating on establishing a career as an actress.
Following her appearance in the Australian film The Black Balloon, Gemma has been taking acting lessons in New York where she now lives.
Christine Fox, from Vivien’s Model Management, originally discovered Gemma at a modelling contest in Perth. She says many models take a break from the catwalk when they hit their early 20s. At this age they are often tempted by the social scene and may start taking the contraceptive pill, which can all contribute to body changes.
“We do find models so young these days and we have to be prepared for changes,” she said.
“We try to instill in them that they have to stay fit. Their business is to maintain their looks and sometimes it gets a bit hard and they get tired of it.
“They all have a little break like Gemma is having.”
