Supermodel Gemma Ward hits out at the beauty world

Aussie supermodel turned actress Gemma Ward has slammed plastic surgery as mutilation.
The 23-year-old also described the beauty world as absurd as she prepared to break her self-imposed exile from the spotlight.
Ward, who has dazzled on the catwalk and the silver screen, said rehearsing for her debut stage role in a powerful but funny play about society’s obsession with physical beauty had changed her outlook.
“[It’s] made me look at everything that we feel about beauty and also about the way it affects us. Just little things I’ve started to notice, just how often we refer to things as beautiful or not,” she told The Australian.
“It really helps us all to see how absurd we are.”
Ward will appear in the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, adding to her movie credits which include The Strangers and The Black Balloon.
Ward has been almost a recluse since the death of fellow Aussie and Hollywood star Heath Ledger, with whom she was briefly involved just before his death from an accidental overdose in 2008. He was 28.
She attended a press conference in Perth, Western Australia, to discuss the play, called The Ugly One, which opens at the new State Theatre Centre of Western Australia next month.
Ward said her modeling career helped her empathise with the characters in the play.
“Plastic surgery seems to be the one thing today which is the most popular . . . almost a form of mutilation for beauty,” she said.
She said her views on beauty would not stop her returning to modeling.
