Wearing a couture gown to your prom is beyond the wildest dreams of even the most pampered teen. But for 17-year-old model-of-the-moment Lindsey Wixson all it took was a passing comment to make her Cinderella moment happen.

When a fashion blogger quizzed Wixson last autumn about which designer she wanted to wear to her prom she replied: ‘Jason Wu,’ adding: ‘Oh my god, my friends would be, like, “how much did that cost? What?” Like freaking out.’

Having heard that that the gap-toothed teenager had been coveting one of his dresses for her big night, designer Jason Wu – known as Michelle Obama’s go-to man for glamorous gowns – decided to step in and create her a bespoke cobalt blue frock for the event, which took place last Saturday. He told teen Teen Vogue: ‘I loved working with Lindsey on her prom dress. She has such a great sense of style. She looked beautiful.’

Teaming her one shoulder dress with pearl-coloured heels, a white and blue floral corsage and a flapper-inspired clutch, Miss Wixson, spent the night partying with her ex-classmates (because her modelling career has taken off so spectacularly Wixson is no longer enrolled in high school). ‘I had the best time at prom night on Saturday!’ she tweeted afterwards, before thanking Mr Wu for helping to make it happen.

Having decided at the tender age of 12 that she wanted to be a model, Wixson’s career-making moment came in 2009, when she was hand-selected by legendary photographer Steven Meisel to take part in a shoot for Italian Vogue. After just two years in the business her trademark rosebud lips have fronted major campaigns for brands including Miu Miu, Alexander McQueen and Mulberry, earning her tens of thousands of dollars in the process. Even H&M has jumped on the Wixson bandwagon, casting her alongside Gisele in its latest Conscious Collection campaign.

Now, while her school mates have been cramming for exams, planning for college and buying their dresses at the local shopping mall, Miss Wixson has been living the life of a supermodel. But, fellow teenagers will be relieved to learn, life is not always plain-sailing for the young beauty. Just a month before her prom, Miss Wixson jetted home early from Paris Fashion Week – leaving the likes of Chanel And Louis Vuitton in the lurch – after an allergic reaction to make-up meant that she couldn’t take to the catwalk.

But with spring campaigns for Marc Jacobs, Mullberry, Jill Stuart and Alexander McQueen already in the bag, it still looks like it is going to be another stellar year for the model many are calling the face to watch for 2011.
