Supermodel Nicole Trunfio has come out strongly in defense of her Elle Australia breastfeeding cover.

The sensational cover of the June Issue which was met with backlash from critics featured the first-time mom in a designer dress holding while her baby Zion, is in the buff. There was also a naked photo of Trunfio holding her son. While the cover in question was made available to subscribers only feedback to the image has been mixed.

Some considered it empowering while others found it offensive and that it did not normalize breast feeding in public and disagreed about what it accomplishes. Some have questioned whether showing such an intimate moment on the cover of a fashion magazine normalizes breast-feeding and celebrate motherhood, or sexualizes an act that needs to be understood as purely maternal in order to gain wider acceptance in public spaces. The issue was also hotly debated on Friday’s Today show, with Mornings host Sonia Kruger telling Editor-in-Chief Justine Cullen that she ‘wussed out’. In her editor’s letter Cullen said that the magazine did not intend to capture this controversial image.

“I didn’t think it was going to be such a big deal. There’s nothing worse than, as a mother, doing something that’s so necessary like feeding your child and feeling like somebody could have an opinion about it or somebody’s looking at you the wrong way,” Trunfio said appearing on Good Morning America. “I think it should be something that isn’t a [subscriber’s cover], it’s a huge part of being a woman and motherhood.”

Trunfio also explained how much the image moved her when she saw it; “He was with me on set all day and there were periods I’d take off to feed him and I had on this beautiful outfit and the stylist was like, ‘Wow, that looks amazing, let’s move you on set to have this picture taken.’ Not that it was going to become a part of the shoot.”

As she battles the stigma of nursing in public Trunfio took to her instagram account last week to replicate Gisele’s famous breastfeeding shot. In the image she is seen posing with her son Zion during a glamorous photoshoot. The image was shared with her 102k Instagram followers with the caption; ‘Work! Love this glam squad @jodieboland @thomasdunkin1 @ingefonteyne.’

With the topic of breastfeeding being controversial for quite sometime, a number of celebs have spoken out in support of the practice with the hope that it becomes completely commonplace. However there has been a great amount of positive responses to Trunfio’s cover. On Elle Australia’s Instagram account, the magazine is already generating a lot of positive feedback.
