Model and activist Adwoa Aboah fronts the December issue of British Vogue, which marks the highly anticipated first issue led by new editor-in-chief Edward Enninful.

The cover was revealed on Tuesday night by BBC News and has been commended by the fashion and celebrity world. Aboah who was recently announced as the newest face of Marc Jacobs Beauty for 2018, was lensed by Steven Meisel known for shooting Vogue Italia covers. She appears wearing a Marc Jacobs printed minidress and turban, combined with long diamond earrings. Make-up was courtesy of beauty director Pat McGrath.

The new issue significantly marks the beginning of a much-anticipated new era for the publication. The issue marks the third time a black model has been featured on a solo British Vogue cover. Prior to Aboah, Naomi Campbell covered the August 2002 issue and Jourdan Dunn in February 2015.

Enninful who took over the reigns from Alexandra Schulman in the summer of this year transformed the beauty and fashion team, with the aim of ‘modernization’. The new editor-in-chief also enlisted Naomi Campbell as contributing editor.

In an interview with the BBC, Enninful said that he had the feeling that British Vogue was no longer relevant in today’s multicultural Britain and he wants to make the magazine ‘more accessible’ and ‘friendlier’. ‘It is about diversity – showing different women, different body shapes, different races, different classes [and] tackling gender. I wanted to create a magazine that was open and friendly; a bit like a shop you are not scared to walk into. You are going to see all different colours, shapes, ages, genders, religions. That I am very excited about. You are going to see less of models who don’t look so healthy.’

Last weekend, Enninful shared a teaser on social media from the new cover, using the hashtag #NewVogue .

In addition to Adwoa, there are even more big names in the magazine, such as CCara Delevingne, Zadie Smith, Christopher Bailey, Victoria Beckham, John Galliano and London mayor Sadiq Khan. The issue is a tribute to all things Great Britain.

The December issue of Vogue Uk hits newsstands on November 10.
