Jean Paul Gaultier announces retirement

Jean Paul Gaultier

Jean-Paul Gaultier is taking a final bow.

The Legendary French designer announced that he is retiring from Fashion after an impressive 50 years in the business.

‘This show celebrating 50 years of my career will also be my last. But rest assured Haute Couture will continue with a new concept,’ the 67-year-old designer said in an Instagram video post.

Discovered by fashion legend Pierre Cardin in the 1970s, the ‘enfant terrible’ of Fashion founded his label in 1982 and gained recognition for his eccentric and provocative design style. His rebellious style broke the taboos of the fashion and blurred the boundaries between men’s and women’s clothing. Gaultier also released a perfume line and served as the creative director of Hermes from 2003 to 2010. In 2014, the designer announced his retirement from ready-to-wear. Most recently he had worked with clothing brand Supreme.

Jean-Paul Gaultier’s final couture show will take place during the Paris Haute Couture Week on Wednesday, January 22 at the Theatre du Chatelet.
