Michael Kors collaborates with accessories brand Ashya in celebration of 40th anniversary

American luxury fashion brand Michael Kors and Brooklyn-based design studio ASHYA have collaborated on a limited-edition capsule of bags to coincide with his 40th anniversary celebration.

Titled ‘ASHYA X MICHAEL KORS’ the collection is based on shared vision for pared down luxury and comprises of two exclusive bags: a Bolo bag (298 USD) and multi bag (498 USD). Both pieces come in two colors and feature a pattern, called ‘Saga Signature’, which acccording to the brand was inspired by the tradition of West African woven textiles, offering a singular perspective on the iconic Michael Kors logo print.

Michael Kors wanted to use this collaboration as way to give to help bring the ASHYA brand to a larger global audience through the distribution, and platform of the Michael Kors company. ‘When I first saw the work of Ashley and Moya at ASHYA, their thoughtfulness and unique point of view impressed me immediately. I reached out to them about doing a collaboration together that would merge our sensibilities and I am thrilled with how the collaboration came together,’ said Kors.

‘As a nod to our continued explorations of our roots, and this global ‘stepping out’ moment for our brand, we wanted to reference West African weaving in the design of the ASHYA x Michael Kors styles, creating something that has historical reference to our identity and that really spoke to the specialness of this partnership. African textiles have had, and still have, an exceptional significance as a means of communication within communities and act as a conduit of stories passed down through generations. There is a spiritual and historical significance to the colors, patterns and decorative elements used. The aesthetic value of West African textile designs can be seen in the lines and motifs created for this collaboration,’ said ASHYA founders Ashley Cimone and Moya Annece.

Founded in 2017 by Annece and Cimone, ASHYA is known for their minimalist, gender-neutral leather accessories inspired by a different destination. The emerging Black women-owned brand aims to share cultural narratives at the intersection of luxury and utilitarianism through their thoughtful designs.
