It has destroyed relationships, led to a catalogue of injuries from broken bones to a heart scare and brought unwelcome attention to the private lives of its contestants.
Now, the curse of Strictly Come Dancing has struck again after supermodel Jodie Kidd fractured one of her ribs during a complicated dance routine.
The 30-year-old injured herself while rehearsing the American Smooth dance with her professional partner Ian Waite a fortnight ago. But she has ignored her doctor’s advice to rest and vowed to continue her gruelling regime on the programme.
The 6ft 2in star has undergone intensive physiotherapy at a private Harley Street clinic and is taking anti-inflammatory pills to ease the pain.
The BBC, which has a full-time doctor on the set of Strictly Come Dancing, offered Jodie free physiotherapy but she chose to see her own doctor instead. And despite her agony, the model-turned-presenter spent the past week rehearsing for four hours a day.
Last night she and Ian performed a complicated paso doble with some breathtaking acrobatics which earned them a passable 26 points.
A source on the BBC1 show said: ‘Jodie injured herself pretty badly while training to do the American Smooth dance two weeks ago. It was a very challenging routine with a couple of tough lifts.
‘During one of them, Ian held Jodie a little too tightly and fractured her rib. At the time she didn’t realise how bad the injury was but as the week wore on she felt very sore and short of breath. Her chest was very tight and she decided to have things checked out.
‘She had an X-ray, which found a hairline fracture to one of her left ribs. Jodie was upset because she didn’t want to have to pull out of the show. She insisted on doing
the dance last Saturday. She was thrown around and no one knew she was in huge amounts of pain.
‘Ian is feeling guilty – he did not realise his own strength. He has been going to physio with her and doing everything he can to make her comfortable while rehearsing.’
A spokesman for the model confirmed her fractured rib.
Jodie is just the latest Strictly contestant to sustain an injury. Andrew Castle and Ola Jordan both broke toes last month, and Jimmy Tarbuck had to withdraw from a previous series after a heart scare.
Stephanie Beacham injured her back, Kate Garraway suffered tendonitis, and Matt Di Angelo hurt his knee.
Meanwhile Olympic swimmer Mark Foster, 38, was last night branded a ‘stick insect on acid’ for his worst-ever score. He and partner Hayley Holt ended last with 17 points. It makes them favourites to be in the head-to-head dance-off tonight.

The supermodel wishes she could be taller
Kate Moss has earnt a fortune as a top model and fashion icon. She has her own clothes range at Topshop and has just launched new perfume Velvet Hour.
But the 34-year-old from Croydon knows her body is far from perfect - she just makes the most of what she’s got,
‘I’d love to have longer legs,’ she says, ’so that’s why I own lots of leggings: because they make my legs look longer.
‘People would be surprised if they knew how little time I spend obsessing about what I’m going to wear.’
Kate knows that smoking is bad for skin but isn’t prepared to give up the habit to help keep her looks.
‘I couldn’t survive without cigarettes,’ she admits. ‘I’ve been smoking Marlboro Lights since I was 14 and I have no intention of quitting now.’

Why is it that people love getting naked for a good cause? Hey, I’m in no way complaining here, but it just seems like these days the outfit of choice for any grassroots campaign is the birthday suit. Case in point: a one Miss Giselle Bundchen in a new ad campaign promoting the Forests of the Future project — an initiative assisting the reforestation of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.
In the ad, Gisele is photographed standing naked in a forest, donning some strategically placed foliage to cover her modesty and crossing her hands to cover her breasts. Scandalous!
Deforestation is a big problem, and I don’t mean to get all vegetarian on you, but did you know that between 1991 and 2000, the total area of forest lost in the Amazon rose from 415,000 to 587,000 km, with most of the lost forest becoming pasture for cattle? In fact, 70% of formerly forested land in the Amazon, and 91% of land deforested since 1970, is used for livestock pasture!
Kinda makes a brother stop and think, right?

At an NYC shoot for Victoria’s Secret, supermodel Adriana Lima gushes to OK! about her fiancé, Memphis Grizzlies basketball star Marko Jaric.
“He’s very honest, he has a great heart and we work really well together,” she explains. “He’s a family man and a gentleman, which I love.”
The supermodel says that she and Marko will marry in Brazil, her native country.
“I want it to be close to my family, where my roots are,” she says, adding, “and I’m the only girl in the family.”
After digging into a luscious peach cobbler dessert during her lunch break, Adriana, 27, returns to set to shoot the $5 million Black Diamond Fantasy Miracle Bra, which she’ll wear for The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, airing Dec. 3 at 10 p.m. on CBS.
“I can picture myself wearing it on the beach with a very thin blouse to see the sparkles through the shirt,” she exclaims. “I would love for someone to get it for me as a gift!”

Kate Moss is reportedly buying a Caribbean lovenest for her and boyfriend Jamie Hince.
The supermodel has apparently been hunting for an island hideaway in Puerto Rico, and according to The Sun, she has found her dream holiday home and is set to fly out and finalise the sale soon.
A source said: “Kate loves the Caribbean and has been investigating owning a home in Puerto Rico. Now she’s putting her plan into action.
“She wants somewhere very private and reckons she and Jamie could find peace and tranquillity on the island. It will be her special place where she can escape from the limelight.”
The 34-year-old model already owns an ?8 million townhouse in north London and a country home in The Cotswolds.
Kate and The Kills guitarist Jamie were reported to have split last month but have rekindled their romance, and the star is said to be taming her party-loving ways for him.

Helena Christensen has revealed that she can put her make-up on in the dark.
The supermodel has admitted that her modelling experiences in the past have helped her do her make-up in the pitch black.
She said: “After 20 years of modelling, I can do my make-up in utter darkness,”
“I grew up in a country where there is no light for half the year - but I always have a small mirror with me, so I can check myself when I get outside.”
Danish Helena has also revealed how environmentally conscious she is, by toning down her lighting at home, wherever she can.
“I have never had any proper lighting in my houses,” she says in interview with NZCITY.CO.NZ. “I do have a few low-energy bulbs in my homes, but I try to use as little electricity as possible. I have a lot of candles. I like the cosiness of them.”

Sophie Anderton has revealed that her former cocaine habit cost her up to ?1,000 a week and amounted to a six figure debt that left her bankrupt.
The troubled model admits that overcoming her addiction was ‘a dark chapter in her life’ and she now ‘has to take life one day at a time’.
Pictured in a sexy photoshoot, Sophie took inspiration from former English model Christine Keeler - whose involvement with a British government minister discredited the Conservative government in 1963, in what is known as the Profumo Affair.
The sultry shoot sees Sophie, who admits to being happier naked than in clothes, sporting northing but jewellery as she poses cross-legged on a chair.
Now clean of drugs, Sophie says she’s also given up alcohol for fear of it leading to anything worse.
The star refused to reveal the extent of her debt, but admitted it was ’six figures.’
She told Closer: ‘I’m an addict and I have to work at being clean every day,
‘My spending has been out of control for the past few years. I can’t even bear to think about what I used to spend in a week. It’s disgusting
‘I was shopping every week, partying most nights and going on extravagant holidays. I had three Chloe Paddington bags at one point – they’re nearly ?900 a pop!’
‘I was completely irresponsible. I had to have the flashiest cars, designer clothes, shoes and bags, and was always out at the most expensive restaurants. It was mad.’
Despite her nightmarish year, Sophie has finally found happiness with boyfriend Ed Buxton, a 32-year-old property developer. The pair have been together for almost a year.
She said: “I love him very much. I don’t know what will happen in the future, but right now, we’re very happy. He’s been amazing for me.”
After being exposed as an escort girl in 2007, her profile has plummeted along with her earnings.
Sophie recently agreed to undergo a cosmetic surgery treatment to rid herself of cellulite on a cable television show, in a last-ditch attempt to resuscitate her career.
Although as she’s now 31, it’s unclear what sort of career she has left to salvage.
Last year Sophie admitted she was duped into working as an escort girl.She has previously appeared on show Celebrity Love Island.

Kate Moss prefers to dance with women.
The supermodel - who is notorious for her heavy partying lifestyle - hates sharing the dancefloor with men who have no rhythm.
She said: “I don’t dance with men who can’t dance. I prefer to dance with girlfriends.
“If I am going dancing, I wear the highest heels and the shortest dress.”
The 34-year-old beauty - who claims one of her favourite dresses was bought for her by ex-boyfriend Johnny Depp when she turned 21 - revealed she uses her “emotions” to help her choose what to wear.
She said: “I don’t think of things as outfits. I throw together what I feel is right for the night.
“I follow my feelings and just get dressed. I go with a feeling or emotion and don’t necessarily plan, unless perhaps it’s a special occasion.”
Kate - who recently vowed to become virtually teetotal in order to win back boyfriend Jamie Hince - also revealed the contents of her handbag for a big night out.
She added to The Sunday Times newspaper: “All you need to take out is black eyeliner, keys and money.”

A New York wedding is in the future for Victoria’s Secret angel Gisele Bundchen and her New England Patriots beau Tom Brady, according to Page Six . The couple reportedly have plans to celebrate their wedding reception at Tavern on the Green.
A spy dished to the gossip rag, “They were recently there, and Brady had a long chat with Broadway Joe Namath.” As we’ve seen before, Gisele’s already been practicing her stepmommy skills with Tom’s son John Moynahan, so she’s up for the challenge.
Gisele also struck some sexy poses on the beach for this photoshoot on the beach in Santa Monica. Her wedding pictures are going to be so perfect, they’ll make you want to puke.

Helena Christensen does not have any lights in her houses.
The Danish supermodel is so conscious of the effect her electricity use has on the planet that she does everything she can to reduce her carbon footprint.
She said: “I have never had any proper lighting in my houses. I do have a few low-energy bulbs in my homes, but I try to use as little electricity as possible.”
Helena insists she prefers to use alternative methods to light her properties, adding: “I have a lot of candles. I like the cosiness of them.”
Helena, 39, also said she has learned to apply her make-up and get ready in near darkness.
