The Fashion World Remembers Prince

Prince, the Legendary musician who died Thursday at age 57, was esteemed in the fashion world for his legendary style and as a fashion icon.

Prince had been hospitalised last week after his plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Moline Illinois. A spokesperson had said that he was fighting a very bad case of the flu.

Considered one of the most iconic musicians in music history his style and perfectionist nature was an inspiration to a vast number of musicians. In his 35-plus-year career he sold over 100 million records and released 39 solo studio albums. His legacy as a musician, a singer, a style icon is unparalleled and the news of his passing came as a shock to his fans, celebrities and fashion folks around the world. While tributes poured in from all over the world, the fashion world took to social media to share their appreciation with anecdotes, flashback images and touching words.

‘I am shocked. I will love and miss you forever,’ wrote designer Donatella Versace.

Riccardo Tisci shared a rare archive snap with the caption ‘#icon #forever 💔’ while costume designer and stylist Arianne Phillips described Prince as ‘a unique, one of a kind, self-styled visionary genius whose style was an organic extension of his music.’

Other tributes poured in from Diane Von Furstenberg writing ‘Good bye beautiful man… your soul and your voice will be here forever! Love Diane’ to Michael Kors ‘Brilliant, creative, one of a kind, a true icon. RIP Prince,’ and Versace who said ‘Nobody has married music and fashion as #Prince did with Versace. Prince was a genius, most of all my friend. Love you, miss – @donatellaversace.’

Prince’s boundless drive is best described in the words of President Obama who paid a touching tribute in statement posted to his official Facebook page, POTUS. ‘Today the world lost a creative icon. Michelle and I join millions of fans from around the world in mourning the sudden death of Prince,’ Obama wrote. ‘Few artists have influenced the sound and trajectory of popular music more distinctly, or touched quite so many people with their talent. As one of the most gifted and prolific musicians of our time, Prince did it all,’ he wrote. ‘Funk. R&B. Rock and roll. He was a virtuoso instrumentalist, a brilliant bandleader and an electrifying performer.’
