Edward Enninful is the new Chief Editor of British Vogue.

The former W Magazine style director will replace Alexandra Shulman, who will leave the publication in June 2017 after 25 years. Enninful’s appointment is a surprise as it marks the first time in its 100-year history that British Vogue will have a male editor.

‘I am pleased to announce the appointment of Edward Enninful, OBE, as Editor of British Vogue effective August 1, 2017,’ said Jonathan Newhouse, chairman and chief executive of Conde Nast International in a statement. ‘Edward is one of the most talented and accomplished fashion editors in the world.’

Newhouse further added that he considered Enninful to be one of the most influential figures in the fashion scene, in Hollywood and the music scene that characterize the contemporary era.

Enninful who was born in Ghana and raised in London, began his career at the age of 16 as a model. He made contacts with well-known photographers and numerous chief editors of renowned modem magazines. He became the youngest fashion director of I-D magazine at just 18 and later, joined W magazine in 2011. In 2014, he was awarded the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator at the British Fashion Awards and received an OBE in 2016 for services to diversity in the fashion industry.

As a contributing editor, he has worked with Franca Sozzani for the Italian edition of Vogue in 1998 and Anna Wintour for US Vogue in 2006.

Enninful will take up his new position in August 2017.
