Raf Simons to be honored at the American Folk Art Museum

Raf Simons is to be honored by the American Folk Art Museum during a benefit gala.

Since his appointment in 2016, the designer and creative director of Calvin Klein has dedicated his efforts to re-establishing the label’s aesthetic and place within American culture.

Simons has ensured that the label stays true to its all-American heritage by incorporating traditional American folklore into his collections such as the use of quilts. The quilts were designed with the help of American artist Sterling Ruby and are decorated with sentences like ‘Made in New York City’ and ‘Designed in America’ to emphasize the American identity of the fashion house.

The American Folk Art Museum which has an extensive collection of folklore art and quilts shares strong similarity between its collections and Simons’ work in reference to pop culture: thus reason enough to pay tribute to the designer.

Monty Blanchard president of the American Folk Art Museum said; ‘The American Folk Art Museum has one of the most special collections in the world in terms of American quilts. Quilts are powerful and creative, and we are very enthusiastic about their use by Mr. Simons at Calvin Klein.’

The gala to honor Simons will take place on October 2 in New York and will also have museum patrons Elyse and Lawrence Benenson and the Wunsch Americana Foundation (which supports American decorative arts).
